My name is Eben Pagan.
Over the past few years, I’ve made important discoveries that have helped me
at least DOUBLE my productivity – and “accidentally” lose about 25 pounds while I was at it.
Even better is the way I FEEL. I have much better ability to FOCUS, and at
least double the physical energy.
I accomplished all of this without using ANY of the traditional “time
management” techniques – like calendars, checklists, and “tickler systems.”
In fact, the methods I used to increase my focus and productivity are so
powerful that they’ve changed me on the INSIDE.
The methods are now habits that have become permanent. I’d like to share with you
the story of how I discovered these important techniques - and how YOU can use them to manage your time
better and get more done in less time… all while improving your health and mental focus.
But first, I want to let you in on something:
I am a “business book” NUT.
I’ve read them all.
And been to the seminars, too.
I’ve tried so many different organization and time management systems, you’d
think I was going for the RECORD or something.
And here’s what I found:
Every one of them had some “good stuff” - and some stuff that was useless to me.
But some of them had some techniques that actually made my life WORSE.
Yes, you read that right. Some of the things I learned and tried out actually made me less organized and productive
(which is hard to imagine, because I’m a pretty disorganized person naturally).
One seminar I went to gave you a big, leather-bound, zippered “planner” – filled
with beautifully-designed calendar and checklist pages.
The idea was to plan what you were going to do each week with some of the pages,
then transfer your checklists to the individual
dates, prioritize your activities, and then do them in the “prioritized order.”
I think I used it for a week.
Another system I studied had you put all your different activities into boxes,
and then see how some of the boxes were more important than others.
Great idea, but it didn’t get me to DO anything.
Still another system I studied taught me to do one type of activity per DAY.
Other types of activities got their own entire DAYS.
That one never had a chance with me. I just have too many different types of
things going on to wait for a different day to do them…
Don’t get me wrong here.
Just because every system I tried wasn’t perfect, I did learn a LOT about
managing my time from these systems.
It’s just that there were enough “missing pieces” from each system I tried…
that it prevented it from working for me “as-is.”
I’m sure you can relate to what I’m talking about.
One day, maybe ten years ago or so, I was reading one of Stephen Covey’s
books (I think it was “The 7 Habits”) and I came across this quote:
“Time management is a misnomer. The challenge is to manage ourselves.”
This really struck a chord with me.
I realized that I had been imagining my problem as being something outside
of myself… something that I could somehow get under control.
It was as if time was a “thing” – and if I just learned how to “control”
it, I would magically start getting a lot more done.
I mean, think about the term “time management” for a minute.
The term itself implies that you can manage time.
Which, of course, you CAN’T.
Time goes by, whether you get things done… or not.
We all get the same amount of time each day… and, on average, the same
amount of time in our lives.
It’s not TIME that needs to be managed, it’s US that needs to be managed.
Think about it for a minute.
If I say “manage your time better” what do you think of first?
Making a checklist, putting “to-dos” on your list, adding them to your
calendar… making appointments… that kind of thing.
But if I say “manage YOURSELF better” what do you think of first?
Right, you think about how to get yourself to do the important things you’re not doing.
As Stephen Covey well knows, the challenge really IS to manage ourselves.
The only problem was that no one had a system that taught you HOW to do it!
None of these time management courses contained the secret of how to make sure you do the most important MONEY MAKING things…
A couple of years ago, I found myself in an interesting situation…
I had a successful business, many dozens of employees, and a LOT of opportunities.
I realized that the time was right to launch a couple of new businesses, and take advantage of
two “niche markets” that weren’t being served well.
The challenge I was facing was that I was already working at least 60-80 hours
per week running my CURRENT business.
Or so I told myself.
Here is what my day actually looked like…
I would wake up, go straight to my email, and get “sucked in”.
Soon I was fighting fires and responding to the requests of others.
Often before I had a chance to consider what was actually important to do that day,
I’d get a phone call I had to take, or a conference call would come up.
Somewhere in there I’d check out a few of my favorite blogs, and maybe catch up
on the news.
Then I’d go back and check my email.
Lather, rinse, and repeat.
Before I knew it, the day was nearly over, and I’d realize I hadn’t actually
gotten any of the REALLY important stuff done.
What’s worse is that this had literally become a 100% ROBOTIC BEHAVIOR.
I’m talking about habitual here.
And this process of getting “sucked into” my day spilled over into literally
all areas of my life - and affected me on every level.
When I would get sucked in, I wouldn’t consciously remember to do things
like exercise, eat right, and renew myself. I would try to “squeeze in” these things… between
emails, phone calls, and frantically trying to catch up with everything.
And you know what that feels like, right?
I would forget to eat a meal, and by the time I realized I was hungry, I’d be STARVING.
What do you eat when you’re starving? Exactly. Junk.
And a lot of it.
I wouldn’t exercise regularly.
I wouldn’t relax regularly.
I didn’t even care that I was 25 pounds overweight.
I didn’t have time to care.
What was I going to do about it anyway?
Where was I going to find the time to start and run two NEW companies as well
(not to mention create the products and marketing that they needed to get off the ground)?
I needed a “new paradigm” - and I needed one fast.
Fortunately, I remembered seeing a brilliant teacher at a business seminar that I had attended a few years earlier.
I had attended a high-priced training on the topic of “execution” - but during the seminar, a man that
I’d never heard of was introduced, and he started to talk about the concept of managing not time - but ENERGY.
His name was Tony Schwartz.
To make a long story short, I took a LOT of notes from his presentation, and wound up learning more from
his talk than from the entire rest of the program combined.
As I faced this new challenge in my life, and needed to pull myself up out of the daily mess of email,
phone calls, and distractions, I began to study leading thinkers in the area of time management and
productivity… and I remembered this talk I had seen.
I pulled out Tony’s book “The Power Of Full Engagement,” and started reviewing it (I had purchased it
after seeing him, but never really “dug in” to the book when I got it).
As I read it, the concepts started making a LOT of sense to me.
They key lesson I learned from Tony was the idea that our minds are BUILT to focus on one thing at a
time - but that we lose this ability over time by multi-tasking and allowing ourselves to be distracted
constantly. If we could make it a RITUAL to focus on one important thing at a time, eventually this could
become a HABIT - and success would follow.
Well, this was the “missing piece” that I needed to complete a puzzle that I had been working on for at
least ten YEARS, at that point.
As I mentioned, when I decided to “rebuild” my entire approach to “self-management”
and productivity, I was kind of a mess.
And not only in the “business” arena… my happiness and my health were starting to feel the effects as well.
So you can imagine that when I decided it was time to start a new company (or two), that I had to come up
with a new way.
And I started from scratch.
The first thing I did was to come to a “conscious realization” that if I didn’t feel healthy
and strong, then NOTHING I did would be the best I could do.
As a result, I began using the first 90 minutes or so of my day to exercise, eat a light,
balanced meal, and read for 15-20 minutes in a good book.
It seems completely “counter-intuitive” – but this one change made a HUGE difference INSTANTLY.
Above and beyond the benefits of daily exercise, just the fact that I wasn’t starting my day
reading email set my days up on a very different path.
Instead of getting SUCKED IN to a bunch of problems and requests from other people, I had
time to reflect on what I wanted to do that day.
It might not sound like a big shift, but I can guarantee that when you try it yourself,
you’re going to experience a MASSIVE, empowering shift.
The next thing I did was to “unscramble” the mess… and separate the types of things that
I did into “clean” blocks of time.
One of the concepts that I learned from Tony Schwartz is that we often “mix up” different
types of activities – and create a big “Grey Zone” mess that has no real purpose, and very
I believe this to be one of the most dangerous traps we entrepreneurs face in getting things done.
We read an email, then take a call, then go back to email, then try to do some work, then
remember something we forgot to tell someone… so we go back to email… then forget what we
were doing… then get sucked into our email again…
A big mess.
So I stopped reading email constantly through the day, and began focusing my time in
larger blocks… on one key task at a time.
Now, if you own your own business, you know just how important it is to market your
business to get new customers.
In fact, you know that marketing your business and creating new products are really the
ONLY things that make you money.
But how do you BEHAVE on a day-to-day basis?
Just like I used to do, you probably check your email constantly, look at your cell
phone and text messages, answer instant messages, get on the phone… and try to “fit in”
the important MONEY-MAKING activities (marketing and product creation) BETWEEN your
emails, text messages, instant messages, and phone calls!
This also leads to completely WASTING any breaks you do take – mindlessly surfing the
internet, eating junk food, or complaining about how crazy life is.
If you take a minute and think about it, you’ll realize just how backwards this really is.
I mean, on an “intuitive” level – shouldn’t your email, text messages, phone calls, etc.
wait until the important work of getting new customers and creating products for them is DONE?
So I reorganized my day to focus on just that: Getting customers and creating products.
I started spending 90-120 minutes at a time on ONE TASK.
And I will tell you, this was a GAME-CHANGER.
And I will tell you right now, if could only change one thing about the way you work…
that would make you a LOT more money… start focusing your work in blocks of time… on
BIG money-making activities!
As I mentioned before, I’ve studied a LOT of different productivity and time management
And I really admire and respect the creators of these programs.
Some of the insights that I’ve gotten from these experts have made me a LOT of money.
But it was the idea of focusing time in large, uninterrupted blocks – then creating
ROUTINES that become HABITS that really changed everything for me.
Once I learned about this piece of the puzzle, I was finally able to use the best
techniques from the OTHER systems that I had learned before… ALL TOGETHER.
I lost about 25 pounds, became healthier than I’ve ever been in my life (I basically
don’t get sick anymore, because my immune system is so strong), and I increased my
energy by at LEAST 100% (and learned how to sustain my energy as well – so it’s strong
and focused during all of my work sessions).
I was also able to start two new companies – that each did millions of dollars in sales
their first year – while continuing to run my current business.
If you would have told me that this level of productivity, energy, and health was
possible – with LESS EFFORT AND “HARD WORK” than I was doing before, I would have
thought you were completely out of your mind.
But now that I’ve created it in my own life, I KNOW it’s possible. And I know that
it’s actually easier to have high energy, strong focus, and get more done… than it
is to feel anxious and fatigued… and get very little done.
I have honestly wanted to create a “Time Management and Productivity” training program for YEARS.
Even before I had the amazing breakthroughs that I’ve had over the past couple of years,

As I was reading through the answers to a question that asked about “biggest frustrations
and challenges” – one type of answer REALLY stood out.
Every few lines, I would read the words “time management” or “productivity” or “stay
focused” or “get myself to take action” – or something similar.
Frank and I started to notice that the biggest challenge that these people were talking
about had nothing to do with publishing information products – they were frustrated with
time management and productivity!
On the way home from that day with Frank, I thought a lot about those survey answers…
and what I could do to help.
It was obvious that almost EVERYONE was frustrated with time management… but there was
just one little problem: I wasn’t creating a time management training program!
